The Plum Blossom Double Straight Swords Form is one of the most beautiful and difficult forms taught by Sifu Wong Jackman. In this form the practitioner uses two straight swords, one held in each hand. Often two swords were made as a pair with each sword having a half handle. This way both swords could fit in one specially designed scabbard. This made carrying the swords easier. Double straight swords were often used by women and sometimes have the reputation of being a women’s weapon.
The Plum Blossom Double Straight Swords Form has an elegant yet deadly feel to it and features some excellent balance moves. Plum Blossom Double Straight Swords Form itself is excellent for balancing the body. Holding a sword in each hand shifting from full extension to full retraction and then moving from one pose to the next really balances the body bilaterally. It also forces the practitioner to become incredibly more aware of their body and extend their Qi to new lengths. When you add some moves done balancing on one foot with the other leg extending fully into a kick at the same time as both swords thrusting you have a form that can really advance a persons Kung Fu level quickly. Difficult balance moves require the mind to be calm, focused and free from distractions, this form helps to balance the practitioners mind and build their concentration.
The other thing that this form does is to develop and use a persons’ flexibility. In addition to the usual long stances and high kicks, there is a move where the Northern Shaolin expert drops into the full forward splits with one sword tucked behind the back and the other thrusting out to the side. Because both hands are holding swords, the hands can’t be used to help get out of the splits. Instead a quick little hop by pulling both legs in and quickly popping up onto the feet is required. That move usually gets peoples attention!
