Two Roads Sword from Chinese Kung Fu

 
 

Two Roads Sword is from Lan Shou Quan.  The oral history of Lan Shou Quan relates that this form was acquired by the early generations of Lan Shou experts from a Taoist Priest.  What the name of this priest was, which temple, or sect of Taoism is no longer known.  The Lan Shou masters traded their spear secrets for this form.


Two Roads Sword is an intense and unusual sword form.  Most people on viewing it for the first time think it is completely impractical and rather strange.  Although  some movements are obvious in their meaning such as the thrusts.  Many of the movements are not at all easy to see the application unless you really understand sword application. 


Two Roads Sword is full of very deceptive moves with quick triple feints and unusual angles of approach and closing that combine dodges and evasion while simultaneously advancing. The balance moves and quick hops and changes make this form ideal for fighting in a high mountain terrain of rock outcroppings, trees, and cliffs where normal mobility is severely limited.


In addition, there are many moves that have very difficult balance stances or transitions.  These moves appear to be impractical but would be the very ones to completely trick another skillful opponent who knows the counters to all the familiar moves.


Two Roads Sword contains a profound level of body mind development and transformation.  This form feels like a deep Taoist meditation when performed slowly with full expression given to the stances and arm extensions.  Some of these postures serve to strongly coil the very center of the body before explosive expansion.  Others open meridians or pathways for the bodies energy or Qi and  balance the body and mind.
