Leaping is important to avoid obstacles and to rapidly reposition oneself. Good leaping skill could save your life or the life of someone else someday.
Here are some of the leaps we commonly practice. Any of these leaps could be practiced stressing the qualities of length, height, both height and length, and also low and fast.
Forward Stance Bow Stance to Bow Stance
Rear Leap from Bow stance to empty stance
Crane Stance, Step, Forward Leap, and land in Crane Stance
Sideways Leap from Horse Stance to Horse Stance
Spinning Leap from Bow Stance To Bow Stance
These Drills help to develop leaping skill and power but are not in the Ten Forms.
Crane Hops
Squat Hops
Arch Hops
Squat and then high leap with arm lift and pulldown
Squat and then leap and grab one leg against chest
Squat and then grab both legs against chest
Tumbling Skills
Tumbling skills are very important to develop but often are the least emphasized skill category in Chinese Martial Arts. Tumbling includes all methods of break falls, and acrobatics. Basic exercises include:
Forward Roll
From kneeling
From crouching
From standing
With a leap
With a push from the rear
Backward Roll
From prone
From kneeling
From crouching
From Standing
With a push from the front
Sideways Roll
From prone in a circle
From kneeling
From crouching
From Standing
With a push from the side
Slapping Break Fall
On the mat side to side
On the mat with a kip up between each Break Fall.
Off the partners knee
When practicing these drills proper instruction is essential. With adequate practice these rolls can be performed on concrete with the correct technique. If you only practice your tumbling skills on a mat and you can only do them on a mat you will never perfect your skill and it won’t help you in the street. Rolling is the most desirable technique to use when thrown. If you can roll out of a fall or throw you can minimize the injuries to your body and regain your feet very quickly. When practicing these rolls end in a fighting stance and remain alert around you as you roll. Break Falls are useful when you cannot rollout of the fall. Break Falls use the hands or arms to slap the ground and good body positioning to dissipate the force of the fall.
