Northern Shaolin Kung fu
Jumping Step is the longest of the short Northern Shaolin forms. There are two ideas regarding the naming of this form. One is that the form is called Jumping Step because of the many flying kicks in it. Jumping Step introduces the Flying Lotus Kick and contains some of the most challenging Flying Toe kicks in the system. In total there are 3 Double Toe Flying Kicks, One Flying Toe, Heel Kick, 2 Tornado Kicks, a Flying Lotus Kick, 3 Ground Sweeps and 5 other high kicks. That is a lot of dense and very energetic kicking techniques. With 7 flying kicks in one form the theory the form is called Jumping Steps after many flying kicks is quite reasonable.
Jumping Step can also be translated as Unearthing Step. This interpretation is sound because of its many throwing techniques. These include not only the three Ground Sweeps but also pushes, push trip combinations, and some over the thigh throws.
