Northern Shaolin Kung Fu Flexibility

Success in Northern Shaolin requires extensive stretching to acquire the necessary flexibility.  For the beginning student flexibility training is generally more important than strength training.  Strength training tends to reduce flexibility.  It is practical to develop the flexibility of the muscles and tendons as well as the suppleness of the joints first, without the inhibiting and tightening effects of strength training.  Then to build up the size and density of the muscles while maintaining the desired flexibility.  For most beginning students the practice of the forms and foundation techniques will lead to good gains in muscle strength, size, density, and endurance.  Later strength can be further developed by training with weapons and performing push ups, sit ups and many other exercises.

Flexibility training also helps to prevent and recover from injuries.  Preventing injuries by proper warm up and flexibility aids your success because you can train harder for longer more frequently.  Sifu Jensen recovered from breaking his pelvis in five places and achieved good flexibility by intensive stretching.   If you want to kick high or do low stances you will need good flexibility.
